Curriculum structure

The curriculum is written with all our year groups in mind, Year 7 to 11, and consists of Core Subjects, GCSEs and Equivalents.

Core Subjects are mandatory as per the government education agenda.

Our Post 16 curriculum is individualised to the child, to encourage independence and to give them the skills to move on.

Non Linear Courses

Alchemy Schools offers a range of Non-Linear courses these include, NCFE Sports Level 1 & Level 2, Art & Design, Catering and Relationship, Sex and Health Education as part of the Governments Agenda.

Students will be able to access these non-examination courses throughout the Academic year, by building a portfolio to enable them to gain the qualifications they need.

All students, will participate in Physical Education as well as competing in our House Competitions.

Linear Courses

Most examination courses lead to the General Certification of Secondary Education (GCSE) and some courses lead to the Level 1 or 2 BTEC Award or certification.

Students will also have the opportunities to achieve their Entry Level Certifications  throughout the academic year.

GCSE Examination

All subjects will lead either into a full GCSE or BTEC Qualification or a Level 1 / 2 Award or Certification. Some GCSE courses are examined at two levels – higher and foundation. The highest grade you can achieve in Foundation Level is a 5. Your teachers will guide you towards the correct final level of entry.

Some courses involve controlled assessments which will count toward your qualification.

Grading

The GCSE Qualifications were reformed in September 2016 with a new grading system 9-1.

It is possible to fail a GCSE by getting a U (Ungraded) result.

BTEC results are grades Distinction*, Distinction, Merit, Pass or Fail. During this transitional period for GCSE reform a Distinction* is equivalent to a 9 (A*) grade under the reformed GCSEs with a Distinction equivalent to a grade 8 (A), Merit equivalent to a grade 7/6 (B) and a pass to a grade 4/5 (C)

GCSE A*-G / 1-9 equivalent
